Premature Ejaculation and Priligy Dapoxetine Drug

One third of total male population has to deal with the problem of premature ejaculation in their sexual life. There was no noteworthy medicinal treatment available for this sexual dysfunction till the introduction of Priligy (Dapoxetine) into the market. However, the drug is still not able to convince the USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding its safeness and effectiveness despite its promising results for the treatment of PE in two clinical trials. So, the probability of Dapoxetine being available in the US market in near future is very low.

Priligy (Dapoxetine) is developed by the pharmaceutical major, Johnson & Johnson, in collaboration with ALZA Corporation. As per the study, men who were administered the experimental medication Dapoxetine showed longer erection time and better control on premature ejaculation than men who took placebos.

Dapoxetine belongs to a class of drugs called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI). Other drugs in this class include Paxil, Zoloft, and Prozac. Dapoxetine is little bit different from these SSRIs which are principally recommended for depression and other psychiatric disorders. This drug for premature ejaculation is prescribed to be taken as needed, usually 1 to 3 hours before sexual encounter. There is no need to take it every day. It is also evaporated from the body more speedily than other SSRIs.

Priligy (Dapoxetine) was all set to become the first drug for premature ejaculation treatment if the FDA had not issued a letter of “not approvable” to the manufacturer in October 2005. The authority, however, had not divulged the details about its disapproval. In a press release, ALZA Corp. vowed to address concerns raised in the FDA letter. A spokesperson for the parent company, Johnson & Johnson, reiterated the company’s commitment to the worldwide growth of Priligy (Dapoxetine).

Men who want to treat their premature ejaculation problem are usually prescribed for practical methods to follow. Some of them are recommended for medicinal therapy using traditional anti-depressants because delayed ejaculation is a regular side effect in men who take these long-acting SSRIs for depressive disorder. However, the role of SSRIs for the treatment of premature ejaculation is their off-label use. These drugs are also a cause for other potential side effects like erectile dysfunction and loss of libido or sexual desire, thereby making them inapplicable for PE treatment.

On the other hand, men who had taken Dapoxetine during a study reported of improved staying power in sexual encounters by two minutes from their previous just under a minute. They had also more control over their ejaculations in comparison to placebo-treated men. Their female partners were satisfied with their enhanced sexual performance too. So, patients need an effective and specific treatment for their problem of premature ejaculation than any off-label use of drugs. Priligy (Dapoxetine) can do a world of good for them in treating as well as throwing an open discussion about the ailment to create more awareness among masses.
